Does your holiday mean doing the same daily routine in a nicer place?

THE WISDOM YOU GET WHEN DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

What kind of holiday do you normally choose?

If you are a leader who has a demanding job, I bet you like a good hotel vacation. You feel relaxed, recharged, and refreshed. Then you're back to reality keeping the same routine.

What if you chose something different?

It's normal to choose a no-need-to-think holiday because it's easy, reliable, and stress-free. I get it. I have done it too.

Yet the more we do that, the more we think in the same old way. And it doesn't help us grow or build our capability to handle life changes.

A Different Kind of Trip

Recently I joined a 22km hike to the Seven Sisters Cliffs. It was far different from my normal comfortable park walk. I wasn't 100% sure if I could handle it because I hadn't done any proper hiking for years.

I decided to go for it anyway because it'd be good to experience hiking in the UK for the first time.

During the trip, I felt relieved knowing it was harder than I thought but manageable. When I reached one of the cliffs, I stopped and looked around. I noticed there was nothing but hikers, open paths, the horizon, and the sky.

I am used to urban environments full of buildings, shops, and busy roads that sets the rhythm of modern life. So it was surreal to be in a scene like in ‘The Odyssey’ movie, where the crew’s journeys are influenced by what’s happening in that space.

It’s a great reminder of how our environment shapes us.

Imagine if you were to live on that cliff; how different would your view of life be?

Would you still do what you do? Would you still worry about what’s on your mind?

Your Experience Matters More Now

With increased uncertainty in the future, we need experiences to help us think beyond our current context and limits. And when knowledge is easily accessible, it’s time to equip ourselves differently.

As the ancient Chinese proverb says: 讀萬卷書不如行萬里路 It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.

Perhaps for your next trip, choose one activity that you don’t normally do and experience it with curiosity.

If you usually go for city breaks, plan a day in the countryside. If you often go for adventure, try a meditation retreat.

Anything out of your norm will expand how you see.

That way you have both the knowledge and experience for real, not in a Word document that anyone can generate.
