5 Tips to Manage Your Emotional Toll

Being made redundant is a tough challenge regardless of whether you expected it or not.

I have been there, and I feel for you if this is happening to you now. I want to tell you that you can make the most out of it, no matter how painful it may feel at this moment.

Beyond losing the income, which is a realistic issue, the emotional toll is what impacts you the most:

  • Suffering from stress and anxiety due to the uncertainty

  • Feeling frustrated, confused, and angered by the disruption

  • Having more self-doubt and less confidence

  • Losing a sense of direction, purpose, and identity associated with a job

  • Worrying about how others think of you

You have all valid reasons to hold on to these emotions, but it will only keep you stuck and will not help improve the situation.

As a former C-suite leader who was involved in organizational decision, I can tell you that redundancy decision is not about you. It’s about the company and its leaders, and their own business survival/job security, inevitably.

Yes, it’s out of your control.

But, you are set FREE now.

With the FREEDOM you have, you can create more opportunities by making new choices.

Here are 5 things you can control that can help you better manage the emotional tolls and turn Redundancy into Revival:

  1. Count your blessings to change your perspective

Losing a job can feel shocking. Do remember, there are incidents in life that could be worse.

Practicing daily gratitude is an effective way to change how you feel. By writing 3 things you’re grateful for every day in the morning or before you sleep, you gradually shift yourself from a victim to a creator. This will help you feel more optimistic and confident to overcome the upcoming challenge.

  1. Do things that bring you joy

Spend time doing things you love that bring you joy. Something you did not have time to do before when you have a job.

During any crisis, our creativity plays a key role in exploring better solutions. When we feel more joyful, we become more creative and can attract better-aligned opportunities.

  1. Meet inspiring people and widen your network

Our thoughts are limited by our surroundings. Your existing network, especially your colleagues, may not be able to offer you support because they may worry about being impacted by redundancy next.

By meeting inspiring people in different settings, you will create new insights to connect to other possible paths

  1. Keep yourself engaged by serving others

We all need to feel a sense of contribution to something beyond ourselves. When it cannot be fulfilled through a job, we can create opportunities by helping others.

It doesn’t matter what the contribution is: helping your family, friends, doing some freelance/part-time jobs, or supporting charities. As long as you keep serving others, it builds your self-worth while you are looking for the next career opportunity.

  1. Structure your time and use it wisely

Assuming you worked 8 hours and 5 days a week. You are now gifted 40 hours a week.

You become one of the RICHEST PEOPLE in the world in having TIME, one of the most precious assets in life, so use it wisely.

How would you allocate the 40 hours, as if it were money? What would be a good investment? Beyond spending the time to look for another job or updating your CV/LinkedIn profile or having some reflection, what would you do? What activities would give you a better return on your life?

Improve your health? Upgrade your skills? Spend time on relationships?

The better you assign your gifted TIME purposefully, the better foundation you build for future success.

Experiencing redundancy is tough, but it also propels us to explore more possibilities in life that we didn't notice when we were in a job.
